Ingrown / Involuted toe nails can occur when the nail pierces the skin and becomes a foreign body in the toe, this may be due to trauma, tight ill fitting shoes, badly cutting the nails or basically the nail plate being too large for the nail bed. This can then become very painful and sometimes can cause infection. Involuted nails have a curvature to them which causes the nail to dig in and put pressure on the toe.
The nail in the first instance can be treated by cutting it back, but if the problem persists or is severe, nail surgery under local anesthetic may be performed with or without the use of Phenol (the chemical Phenol applied stops the nail from growing back giving a permanent solution to the problem).
